We changed Feline Greenies® dental treats to make them
better. New Feline Greenies® dental
treats have improved nutritional credentials (higher protein and fat, and less
carbohydrate), increased palatability (superior to Friskies®, Whisker Lickins,
and Pounce), improved shape design for optimum tooth penetration and mechanical
scraping action, and improved the shelf stability (guaranteed 18 months shelf
life from date of manufacture).
Periodontal disease is the most common disease of adult cats
and dogs. It is often a silent process that progresses without
detection. Even in cases of severe dental disease, your cat may not
demonstrate obvious discomfort. Oral disease is also a primary cause of
offensive breath odor.
Dental plaque is the key substance that must be controlled
in order to control periodontal disease. Dental plaque is not easily
removed by normal tongue actions or water drinking but can be affected by
mechanical and chemical means.
Feline Greenies® dental treats are specifically
formulated to mechanically remove the plaque and tartar accumulation on your
cat’s teeth. It serves as a highly palatable treat, provides vitamins,
trace minerals and is a good source of nutrition. Reduction of plaque and
tartar results in a reduction in gingivitis or inflammation of the gums and
will also provide breath freshening.
Feline Greenies® dental treats are formulated
with natural oat fiber which provides texture within the kibble that scrubs
your cat’s teeth. Think of oat fiber as “nature’s toothbrush”. This
scrubbing action is much like the mechanical action of brushing your
teeth. This mechanical scrubbing action serves to remove plaque and tartar
from your cat’s teeth.
Feeding
Feline Greenies® dental treats are recommended for adult
cats of any breed. Kittens have different nutritional needs compared to
adult cats at 10-12 months of age. A
veterinarian should conduct a nutritional assessment of your kitten monthly
from 6 to 16 weeks of age and then annually.
Typically your veterinarian will give instruction for dental care and
nutritional modification at the 1 year visit.
Therefore we recommend that you don’t start your cat on Feline Greenies®
until they are at least ten to 12 months of age.

General Questions
Feline Greenies® dental treats are green because
they contain chlorophyll.
Feline Greenies® dental treats do not contain any artificial
dyes or colors that would permanently stain your carpet. The green color could transfer to your carpet
if your cat were to vomit on the carpet and it wasn’t cleaned up within 10-15
minutes. A typical stain remover such as
Resolve® could be used to lift the stain from the carpet. However, we recommend that you feed the
treats to your cat in his/her food bowl if you are concerned about getting any
crumbs on your carpet.
Feline Greenies® dental treats have a shelf life
of eighteen months from the date of manufacture in the original unopened
package. The package is flushed with nitrogen (an inert gas) to reduce
the level of oxygen in the package to levels low enough to prevent fat
oxidation. Once opened, the product will have a shelf life in your pantry
of one to two months.
If a cat has food allergies to Feline Greenies®
dental treats, it would likely be to chicken or fish. Food allergies in
animals are primarily due to proteins and generally the meat proteins. However, your cat could have allergies to
other sources of proteins such as wheat, corn, or rice as these are also
ingredients.
While both products utilize the mechanical
action of chewing to clean teeth and both are highly effective and incredibly
palatable, Canine Greenies® dental chews are a molded product, and Feline
Greenies® dental treats are extruded.
Feline Greenies® dental treats can be compared to a large kibble of dry
cat food.

Feline Greenies® dental treats are very digestible and is
made from digestible proteins, fats and carbohydrates. They contain
chicken meal as the primary source of protein, in addition to other sources of
protein which include spray dried hydrolyzed chicken protein concentrate, corn
gluten meal, wheat flour and rice flour. Digestibility testing shows Feline Greenies® dental treats to be approx. 82% digestible,
which is similar to premium dry cat foods.
Feline Greenies® dental treats are fortified with essential
vitamins and minerals and are nutritionally complete and balanced for adult
maintenance. They are intended to be
a treat that is fed to your cat twice a day. Feline Greenies® dental
treats are not intended to replace your animal’s maintenance diet of dry or wet
food.
The sodium content is 0.52%. The sodium content of Feline Greenies® dental
treats fall within the average sodium content of dry cat foods (between 0.3 and
0.9%).
Feline Greenies® dental treats are 3805 kcal/.
Feline Greenies® dental treats provide 3.8 calories per gram
and as such would not be considered a low calorie treat. According to the
AAFCO regulatory agency, a “light” or “low calorie” cat food would contain no
more than 3.1 calories per gram for products containing less than 20% moisture.
Feline Greenies® dental treats contain
approximately 15-16% crude fat. Fat is an important source of calories
for active cats and serves as a flavor enhancer.
